Prasart Phra Dhepbidorn or Phra Phuthaprang Prasart
King
Mongkut began construction of the Phra Phuthaprang prasart in
1855 B.C. based on the Prasart Thong in Ayutthaya which he named
the Phra Phuthaprang Prasat. The building was originally intended
to house the Emerald Buddha image but the King died before the
building was
completed. King Chulalongkorn continued with the construction
of the Phra Phuthaprang Prasart and it was completed in 1882B.C.
but because the building turned out to be too small it was not
used to house the Emerald Buddha image. In 1903 the building
was damaged by fire and repairs had to be undertaken. These
were completed in the sixth reign. The building now houses the
statues of the first five Chakri kings and its name has been
changed to Prasart Phra Dhepbidorn.
